Distribution Reserach #1- Jigsaw

 Distribution- Jigsaw's-

Theatrical Distribution-

For the 8th instalment the Saw franchise, Jigsaw, The film followed the traditional theatrical distribution model that was carried out very poorly. The rights were acquired by Lionsgate that distributed the film to 2941 exhibitors in the United States. However the film made its official premiere in the United Kingdom on October 26, 2017. However the film was only made available to a few hundred exhibitors. The film was officially premiered in the United States on October 27, 2017. An important aspect to mention is that the film was showed on IMAX screen the first week. Domestically the film went on to make 16.5 million the opening weekend 4 million less than the it was projected to make. This is the second lowest in the franschie behind Saw 3D. The film went on to perform worst the following weeks. The film dropped a huge 61% on it's second weekend only making 6.8 million, it later dropped another 47% in it's 3rd weekend. Internationally the film preformed well making 64.9 million. However, it is important to mention that the film miss out and was never released in China a huge market for film. No, official word was made on why it didn't get showed in China but undoubtedly it must have been due to the graphic nature of them film not meeting the regulations of China. The film thought it made it's money back preformed horribly. This is due to the weak marketing campaign that began in September with 5 exclusive poster releases with a different actor and a halloween blood drive after it released on October 26, 2017. The film preformed poorly both in reviews and in the box office receiving a 35% fresh rating on Rotten tomatoes and only 16.5 million dollar on the opening weekend. This must have been seen as a failure by the distributor and producers as they didn't seem to promote the theatrical release after the film's opening weekend.

Digital Distribution-

Lionsgate released the film on Bluray and DVD roughly 90 days after it was puller out of theaters. at the end of January in 2018.The digital media release include the film and loads of deleted scenes and behind the scene footage to encourage sales. There was no deals made with any companies and streaming services for early access as the movie, which in hindsight was a huge mistake as releasing the film at release would have helped compensate for the low turnout the opening weekends. The film  became available on streaming services in the following month after its Bluray release. This Distribution plan would not be applied to my film as this is a perfect example of what not to do as it seemed that the distributors  were not knowledgeable in 2017 on what is the most popular way to distribute to the younger adult audience, that being going for a more online approach taking advantage of streaming services.
